Nuclear energy has moved from the margins to the mainstream of Africa's energy policy debate — and the United States has a significant commercial and strategic stake in shaping what comes next. Electricity demand across Africa is expected to grow almost seven times by 2050, driven by rapid urbanization, expanding industries, and surging demand from data centers and digital infrastructure. An increasing number of African governments are turning to nuclear energy to meet that demand — and the landscape is both promising and fiercely competitive. Russia's Rosatom has already signed nuclear energy partnerships with at least 20 African countries, while China is aggressively expanding its footprint across the continent. Africa could generate as much as 15 GW of nuclear energy by 2035, representing a $105 billion commercial opportunity — one where U.S. technology, financing, and regulatory expertise can play a decisive role if deployed with urgency. From traditional large-scale plants in Egypt and South Africa to Small Modular Reactors in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Morocco, the diversity of Africa's nuclear strategies creates multiple entry points for U.S.-Africa partnership. This session brings together corporate leaders, policymakers, and financing institutions to examine where U.S.-Africa nuclear partnerships are gaining traction and what investment frameworks, financing structures, and regulatory pathways are needed to accelerate commercial deployment — before others fill the space.
