Africa’s health sector is entering a new phase of growth and investment opportunity. In recent years, the African Union and its partners have strengthened continental health institutions, advanced regulatory harmonization, and supported local manufacturing strategies through initiatives led by Africa CDC, African Medicines Agency, AUDA-NEPAD, and Afreximbank. At the same time, governments and Regional Economic Communities across the continent are implementing reforms aimed at strengthening health systems, improving market coordination, and creating more enabling environments for private-sector participation.
Yet a major financing gap continues to limit the sector’s potential. A persistent disconnect remains between the risk, return, and financing structures required by investors and financial institutions, and the frameworks currently available to support large-scale health investments. As a result, critical areas including health infrastructure, pharmaceutical and diagnostics manufacturing, clinical research, treatment expansion, and healthcare innovation remain underfinanced despite growing market demand and long-term commercial potential.
As global health financing models evolve from traditional donor-led approaches toward more sustainable public-private partnerships, the need for commercially viable and locally driven financing solutions has become increasingly urgent. This invitation-only roundtable will bring together public- and private-sector leaders to examine the structural barriers constraining investment and explore how governments, development finance institutions, investors, and industry can better align priorities, share risk, and mobilize capital to support the next phase of growth in Africa’s health economy.
