Peter Hendrick Vrooman is the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Mozambique and previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda from 2018 to 2022 and as the Chargé d’Affaires in Ethiopia.  He served as a Director on the staff of the National Security Council and at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and U.S. embassies in New Delhi, Baghdad, Tel Aviv, Beirut, Djibouti, and Mogadishu.

A native of New York State, Mr. Vrooman graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. in Social Studies and earned an M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University’s Industrial College of the Armed Forces, now known as the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, where he focused on the ICT industry. Prior to joining the Foreign Service in 1991, he worked as the special assistant to the President of the American University in Cairo.  He speaks French, Portuguese, Arabic, and some Kinyarwanda.
